I remember when I was in school and the teacher would assign me a project to do. She would give us a time frame to complete this work. Then I would tell myself, “What’s the hurry”. The only problem was that I would start working on the project the night before it was due. Well, now I was in a rush and I ending up doing a pretty crappy project. Fortunately I never failed a grade, but that’s beside the point. The point of my story was that it’s better just to work on something as soon as possible. Waiting won’t get you anywhere. I noticed that people tend to do the same thing when they want to start their own website or blog.

They read, learn, wait and repeat. They do this until they either lose interest or take the plunge. The problem is that people don’t always take that step forward to start a dot com. Why is that? I remember I waited almost a year before I started this blog. I always used the excuse that I needed more information. Of course, I knew everything I could possibly know as a beginner. My father also procrastinated before he started his website. So, I write this to give some advice. If your thinking of starting a website or blog go ahead and create the thing already. What’s the hold up. You will never know how it would turn out until you give it a shot.

Actually creating this blog was the easy part. I had this blog up in about an hour. It’s getting traffic and fine tuning, that’s the hard part. So, my advice would be just put all this info most of you guys know to good use already.

If at First you Don’t Succeed. 15 Biggest Mistakes New Websites Make.

I noticed people make common mistakes when building their websites or blogs. A lot of times it’s attributed to inexperience. So I’m going to and give you guys an F.Y.I. that way you will be ahead of the learning curb. I too made a few of these mistakes at one time or another, a bit of insight will help save you guys lots of wasted time and effort. Remember your website or blogs name needs to maintain it credibility. If you follow these helpful tips you will build a strong foundation for you online endeavour.

  1. Free Hosting. Hosting your site or blog for free is a common mistake people make. Free hosting destorys your credibility, and are their plastered by ugly ads.
  2. Registering a difficult to remember domain. Make sure to register a domain that is easy for others to remember. Preferably something short, quick, easy, and rolls off the tongue.
  3. Bad Niche. Make sure you pick a niche with demand. Don’t make the mistake of picking something that no one but you will want to read.
  4. Bad or not user friendly design. A bad design will not only keep people away from your site, but keep you from making any real money. Check out some successful competitors in your niche to get some design ideas. If you got a blog install a theme where ads are in visible areas, yet it creates user friendly navigation.
  5. Poor font visibility. Keep your fonts easy to read. Don’t blend it with the background. A white background and light grey font will not provide the eyes enough contrast to read the content properly.
  6. Bad content. Keep your content fresh. If you can write articles that are timeless even better. Sometimes we are tempted to take the lazy way out and slap something together quickly, or worse take it directly from another website. Write meaningful originalcontent and stay within the parameters of your niche. Remember you must write for your audience, NOT YOURSELF.  So keep the information useful.
  7. No means of contact. Make sure you add a contact form. People need to be able to communicate with you. Do a Google search for “contact form” copy & paste the code, easy.
  8. Too many ads. Putting too much ads will hurt your brand name and credibility. I know how tempting it can be to put ads all over the place, but keep it tasteful.
  9. No means of subscription. I can’t begin to express the importance of a subscription to your website or blog. Visitors should never be forced to subscribe, but a visible RSS feed, email or newsletter subscription button is very important. Having your visitors sign up to a feed will build loyalty to your site.
  10. Getting desperate. People often loose interest after a few months when they get no results. It takes time to become successful. So do not lose interest. Perseverance is the key to success.
  11. Trying to make money too soon.  Often people concentrate on making money instead of quality content. It’s important to build loyalty first.
  12. (For Bloggers only) Erratic posting. Posting frequently will help build a subscription base. When bloggers stop posting people in your community will stop visiting you.
  13. Not enough diversity. Sometime people put all their eggs in one basket and do not diversify their site.
  14. Not being an active members of the community. With any business it’s important to build contacts. So go do some social networking, email marketing, and get the word out.
  15. Lack of result tracking.Folks it’s important to track results. Whether it’s pay-per-click, AdSense, or simply page visits. Track your results. It will give you insight to what your audience is demanding. Learn how to use your tools and experiment with your results. All successful businesses do this. So why shouldn’t you.

Success in the Internet is not an exact science. Practice makes perfect and your dedication will bring you a long way. Don’t give up, avoid these mistakes. Research and learn, and most important experiment. Staying ahead of the curb will keep you successful so don’t be afraid to try new things.

Making Money Online is About Experimenting

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

You know not everything could be measured in dollars and cents. Sometimes learning a valuable lesson is just as important. So, what I learned in April was not to put all my eggs in one basket.

I noticed that people often make the mistake of learning something and beating it to a pulp. Only to find out it didn’t work for them. SEO is the perfect example of that. Man, when I started trying to build traffic I spent so much time optimizing, keyword phrasing, etc. Just so I could get Google to pick my blog up on their search engine. Not to say that it was a total waste of time, but I could of invested my time doing something more productive. The truth of the matter is, that people create those “Top Ten” list of traffic driving because there is more than one way to skin a cat. Once I started messing around with Twitter, Social bookmarking sites, leaving comments on other blogs, etc. I saw a significant bump in my traffic. Experiment is the best advice I could say. Test and measure your results.

When it comes to actually making money online. Well, without traffic their is no money, but I learned even 10 visit’s a day can generate some income. So, to all you new starter’s, please don’t just focus on AdSense. Big no no. Adsense from my experience doesn’t really make any money until you get some decent traffic. Maybe about 250 visits a day. Even that is a low number. However, Amazon could generate some nice change just from a few sales. You know, those 10 visits you get a day turned out to be profitable. Simply because you might get a few dollars off an Amazon sale, then a few cents off an AdSense click. I would focus more on building your brand then worrying about money. For now. Try different options on your website or blog. Sign up with affiliates people recommend. Not just 1 or 2, but 10. They just might turn out to be more profitable.

Last, if it doesn’t work change it up. Try something new. I found that a bad website design could hurt you. So I would check out what others are doing. Maybe you could pickup on some ad placement tips, website schemes, and other idea’s. The good thing about blogs is that it’s as easy as a button click to change the design theme. However, a website could get tricky. Just don’t hesitate to change things up if you see you don’t have any success.

So take this lesson to the heart. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Try different techniques. Without the ability to change I feel anyone is doomed for failure. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Sorry for the lack of post over the last couple of days. My laptop died on me so I had to format it and go through the whole process of getting it back up. There was a power outage in my house and the lights flickered. Well, needless to say my laptop was plugged in and the hard drive got bad sectors because of it. Well, I tried to repair it through Windows and even third party software, but no dice. The computers sectors did not get fixed. So I finally had no choice but to format the drive. The funny thing is after I formatted the computer my wife went and bought a new HP. Go figure. Now I have two computers. So I gave my old laptop to my brother in law. He needed it for college. However, now that I got a laptop going I am getting back to posting. So as of tomorrow pcbooboo will have regular posts again. Thanks for the patience.

So in the search for a decent working theme, I came across one called lightbreaker. They should of called it head breaker. I don’t know if this is the case with the rest of you, but I downloaded this nice theme and nothing worked. I have a good grasp on html and some javascript, but php is out of my league. The reason I mention this is that I have to plug in all my links and feed-burner feeds manually. So once I started experimenting I noticed that nothing worked. So here begins the trial and error.

After two days I finally got most of the links and forms working. I appreciate people offering themes, but these things should come with instructions. I’m sure their are many people who had to scrap a perfectly good theme because they could not figure out how to get all the features working. Fortunately, I pick up on things fast so after some experimenting I got everything working.

So now what? Well, some fine tuning. I see the current design a bit too busy. Their are lots of things going on. So I am now set on a mission to cleaning up the design, and find that perfect balance. Not too busy or not too plain. The problem with my other theme was It had nothing going on. Just a bunch of white negative space. There was no “pop”. I am determined to make my vision for this blog a reality. If anyone has any feedback I would appreciate it. Just comment me and give me your suggestions.
